Amber George – Artist Statement My paintings and prints are portraits and biographies of nature, as well as documentation of human interaction with nature. To illustrate these observations, I mimic the processes of nature, sometimes loosely and sometimes strictly, to repeatedly reproduce specific plants, plant matter, natural objects and landscapes. I utilize both organic and mechanical means to incorporate the images observed in nature. Photographing scenes of interest quickly and excessively, I reexamine the images later to discern interesting shapes, forms and patterns. Those simplified images then become the matrix from which the work is based, with repeated imagery creating patterns. Both the positive and the negative spaces are of interest to me. Geometric shapes are introduced to provide strength and a framework for organic shapes. Juxtapositions between the interior and exterior, below and above aspects of the natural world and our relationship with it are also explored. Many of the paintings utilize collage to pull together different images of the same object – drawings, monotypes, intaglios, tissue transfers or stencils – taking advantage of the full range of characteristics the encaustic medium provides.
